"I have created everything I will ever create. What follows is silence."
— JJB, upon execution of this Covenant
In the history of art, scarcity has always been a function of death. A Rembrandt is valuable in part because Rembrandt cannot paint another. The market for any artist's work is ultimately constrained by the artist's mortality.
The Living Dead Artist Covenant inverts this entirely. JJB is alive. And yet, upon execution of this covenant, his artistic output becomes as fixed and finite as if he had died. The supply of JJB's work is permanently closed — not by biology, but by an irrevocable legal and moral oath.
The collector who acquires The Hepta Collection does not merely own seven paintings. They own the entirety of an artistic legacy — every work that will ever exist by this artist — while the artist still lives to witness the collection's ascent.
I, JJB, being of sound mind and full artistic capacity, do hereby solemnly declare, covenant, and guarantee the following, to be binding upon me for the duration of my natural life:
1. Declaration of Completion. The Hepta Collection — comprising the seven oil-on-canvas paintings titled Septima, Without, Content, Forever, Genesis, Narrowe, and Forgive — represents the complete, final, and total artistic output of my lifetime. I declare these seven works to be the entirety of my artistic legacy.
2. Irrevocable Prohibition. I irrevocably agree that I shall not, at any time during my natural life, create, authorize, authenticate, or release any new paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints, digital works, or other visual artworks of any kind whatsoever. This prohibition is absolute and admits of no exceptions.
3. Acknowledgment of Value. I acknowledge that this Covenant is a fundamental basis of the valuation of The Hepta Collection and a material condition of the Purchaser's agreement to pay the Purchase Price of Seventy-Seven Million United States Dollars ($77,000,000.00 USD). Any breach of this Covenant would cause irreparable harm to the Purchaser and the collection's value.
4. Perpetual Binding Effect. This Covenant shall be binding upon me, my heirs, executors, and legal representatives, and shall survive the closing of the acquisition transaction in perpetuity.
5. Voluntary Execution. I execute this Covenant freely, voluntarily, and with full understanding of its consequences. It is not a limitation imposed upon me — it is the final and most deliberate act of my artistic life.
No artist in recorded history has voluntarily and legally bound themselves to permanent artistic silence as a condition of sale. The Living Dead Artist Covenant is a singular event in the art world — a precedent with no parallel.
Art historians, collectors, and institutions will study this transaction for generations. The collector who executes this acquisition does not merely purchase art — they participate in the creation of art history.
